During World War I, locals were employed with the British bases amongst them was the airship station known as Saint Sebastian which would later become Saint Sebastian’s parish. Another affinity with Saint Sebastian’s dates back to when in 1813 Qormi was hit by the plague infestation and citizens turned to Saint Sebastian who according to Catholic tradition, is the protector and patron saint of people ill from plague. This led to many Qormi citizens carrying the name of Bastjan (Sebastian) and their derivatives.

A few meters away from where Saint Sebastian’s parish church stands today, one comes across what is known as Pinto’s Loggia. In 1772, to mark the 31st year of reign of Grand Master Manuel Pinto da Fonseca, during the rule for the Knights of Saint John in Malta, Pinto’s Loggia was built. According to tradition Pinto used to sit in the loggia, which bears his coat of arms, in order to shade himself while watching horse racing. The loggia was part of a large farmhouse complex which included stables for the Grandmaster’s horses. Unfortunately, these stables were demolished in 1981 to give way for new dwellings. Today the local market in held in the square were the loggia still stands and which has nowadays become a landmark in Qormi.

Another gem of local architecture in this parish, worthy of notice, is the old chapel dedicated to Saint Sebastian with its bell towers constructed on a novel design and embellished by fine carving works. The chapel has recently undergone a successful restoration process in order to stop the deterioration of the façade resulting from various factors over the years. Saint Sebastian’s parish is only 750 meters away from Palazzino Nina through Triq il-Vitorja, Victory Street. A walk along Triq il-Vitorja leads one to a number of local shops, craftsmen as well as a traditional bakery. Learn more about the Feast of Saint Sebatian.
